125 mm Damascus Petty - Ebony

SGD-SPE506

bladesmith: Dotson

A compact 125 mm petty made for the finer work of the kitchen: trimming, peeling, mincing, and other tasks where control matters. The 52100 and 15N20 Damascus blade carries a layered pattern from heel to tip, while black and white ebony gives the full-tang handle a dark, natural character. Red and black G10 liners add a flash of color beneath the wood, like a hidden ember in the hilt.

Shamus Dotson

Shamus Dotson’s fascination with blades began as a kid watching Rurouni Kenshin, captivated by the samurai’s respect and admiration for their swords. At fifteen, he met Murray Carter, who took Shamus on as his apprentice when he moved to Oregon. “I’d never made knives before, but I was a hard worker, needed a job, and loved the creativity behind it.”

Two decades and more than 10,000 mostly forged knives later, Shamus continues to push the conventions of traditional kitchen knife making. His distinctive blade patterns, contoured handles, and unexpected color combinations have become hallmarks of his work. And he’s still finding new ways to experiment through his Signature collection.

Damascus technique

  1. Damascus cross section

Damascus, or pattern-welded steel, is made in a similar way to san mai, except alternating layers of high-carbon steel with different properties are forge welded together. When the final blade is etched, the pattern is revealed as a result of these layers.

  2. Forging technique

Three billets can be forged and re-stacked to create many layers, which then become the final blade material.

  3. Shaping the pattern

The bladesmith can remove material by filing, drilling, or grinding part of the metal away, or move the layers with a hammer or press. The resulting patterns vary widely, but the intricate, wavy patterns are a distinctive hallmark of Damascus steel.

Hand wash and dry No dishwasher

Hand wash your knife with warm water and mild dish soap when cutting tasks are finished. Dry immediately after use.

Under no circumstances place your knife in a dishwasher or leave it soaking for extended periods in the sink.

Following our general care instructions will help preserve your knife’s longevity and performance. Visit our care guide for additional information.

Please Note: High-carbon and mild-carbon steel will discolor and darken over time, especially in the presence of acidic foods. It’s normal for a blackish/blue patina to form due to oxidation. Patina tells the story of the unique relationship between a knife and its user.
